چکیده

The objective of this study was to detect auditory cortical activation in non-sedated neonates employing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Using echo-planar functional brain imaging, subjects were presented with a frequency-modulated pure tone; the BOLD signal response was mapped in 5 mm-thick slices running parallel to the superior temporal gyrus. Twenty healthy neonates (13 term, 7 preterm) at term and 4 adult control subjects. Blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) signal in response to auditory stimulus was detected in all 4 adults and in 14 of the 20 neonates. FMRI studies of adult subjects demonstrated increased signal in the superior temporal regions during auditory stimulation. In contrast, signal decreases were detected during auditory stimulation in 9 of 14 newborns with BOLD response. fMRI can be used to detect brain activation with auditory stimulation in human infants. © 2001 Elsevier Science Inc. We describe an MR-compatible ventilator that is computer controlled to generate a variety of breathing patterns, to minimize image degrading effects of breathing motion, and to support delivery of gas anesthesia and experimental inhalational gases. A key feature of this ventilator is the breathing valve that attaches directly to the endotracheal tube to reduce dead volume and allows independent...

In this study the noise sensitivity of various anisotropy indices has been investigated by Monte-Carlo computer simulations and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measurements in a phantom and 5 healthy volunteers. Particularly, we compared the noise performance of indices defined solely in terms of eigenvalues and those based on both the eigenvalues and eigenvectors. It is found that anisotropy ...

We investigated the effects of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) coils and electroencephalographic (EEG) electrodes on T2*-weighted echo-planar images (EPI) at 2.0 T (gradient-echo EPI, mean TE 5 53 ms, 2 3 2 3 4 mm ). In comparison with anatomic gradient-echo images (3D FLASH, TE 5 4 ms, 1 3 1 3 1 mm), T2*-weighted EPI acquisitions of a water-filled spherical phantom revealed severe sign...

Electric Current Density Imaging (CDI) is a new modality of magnetic resonance imaging that enables electric current distribution imaging in conductive samples containing water. So far, two CDI techniques have been in use: DC-CDI operating at zero frequency and RF-CDI operating at the RF Larmor frequency. In this paper we present a new CDI technique, which extends the CDI frequency range to alt...

The subtle signal changes in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) can be easily overwhelmed by noise of various origins. Spikes in the collected fMRI raw data often arise from high-duty usage of the scanner hardware and can introduce significant noise in the image and thereby in the image time series. Consequently, the spikes will corrupt the functional data and degrade the result of fu...
